GRA-Library Avenue: Named for a Library That’s Still Open

Library Avenue sits inside the Government Reserved Area (GRA) of Ikot Ekpene, in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State.

The name isn’t a leftover or a marketing label. It comes from an actual, functioning Divisional Library on the avenue, one of the few in the state still open to the public. Locals just call the area Library Avenue; GRA is understood.

Where it sits

Ikot Ekpene itself sits on the A342 highway between Aba to the west and Uyo, the state capital, to the east. The town is Annang country, and long before it became known for its government offices, it was known nationwide as the Raffia City, after a raffia weaving and cane furniture trade that still runs through its markets.

Ikot Ekpene LGA had a population of about 143,000 at the 2006 census, with recent estimates closer to 180,000.

Government and public offices

Because it’s the GRA, Library Avenue carries more government weight than most residential parts of town.

The Ikot Ekpene Local Government Secretariat is here, along with a Primary Health Care Centre and the High Court of Justice, which has sat in Ikot Ekpene since Akwa Ibom’s judiciary was carved out of the old Cross River State in 1987, one of the state’s first seven judicial divisions.

Banking, health and pharmacies

The avenue is also where people bank. Access Bank, Union Bank, and UBA all have branches here. Giftalive Pharmacy, one of the more recognized pharmacy names in town, has a branch off Library Avenue heading toward Abak Road, with a second branch by the Plaza, the town’s central business area.

Demak Clinic is on the avenue too, for residents who need care outside the public health centre.

Events and hospitality

For events, families use the Ati Annang Foundation Hall, the venue of choice locally for weddings, burials, and other social functions tied to Annang cultural life. Southhills Hotels & Suites, on International School Road within the GRA, is one of Ikot Ekpene’s better-known hotels, and residents also point visitors to the Four Points by Sheraton elsewhere in town when they need something bigger.

Sports, shopping and school

A stadium residents call the mini stadium, officially the Ikot Ekpene Township Stadium, sits off Library Avenue opposite a First Bank branch.

Nteps Supermarket was the area’s main shopping stop before Market Square, a branch of the national Market Square supermarket chain, opened what people now call the biggest mall in Ikot Ekpene.

For higher education, Brainfill Polytechnic and Ritman University, a private university founded in 2015 by former senator Emmanuel Ibok Essien, both draw students into the area.

Markets and eating out

For food and general shopping, residents go beyond the avenue itself. Udua Tor Market is where locals buy everyday cooking supplies, while Urua Mbakara Market is the one people know for clothes, drinks, and books. On Umuahia Road, Kilimanjaro, a Nigerian restaurant chain, recently opened a branch that’s become a new spot for eating out.

Who lives here

Library Avenue’s population is mixed in the way government districts often are: civil servants working out of the secretariat and the court, entrepreneurs running the pharmacies and shops, and farmers who still work land nearby, since farming remains part of life even inside Ikot Ekpene’s built-up LGA.

It’s a busy area by local standards, not because of nightlife, but because so many of the things a resident needs in a single week- government paperwork, banking, a clinic visit, groceries, a place for a wedding- all sit within walking or short bike distance of each other.

Neighboring areas

Library Avenue borders the rest of Ikot Ekpene’s GRA and the Plaza-centered business district, with Abak Road and Umuahia Road giving quick access to two of the town’s other major corridors.

For a neighborhood built around a library and a courthouse, it ends up functioning as one of the more self-contained parts of Raffia City.
