Lagos Street: Off Douglas Road, Beside the Market
Lagos Street sits off Douglas Road in Owerri Municipal Local Government Area, Imo State, right in the commercial core of the state capital.
Where it sits
Douglas Road runs from Bank Road to the Emmanuel College/Aba Road roundabout, and was one of the first dualized roads in Imo State after the state’s creation in 1976. It takes its name from a British colonial district officer, a name that has stuck despite past efforts to change it.
Markets and commerce
Eke Ukwu Owerri, the state capital’s main market, sits on Douglas Road, along with a New Market for motor parts and the Ama Hausa commercial quarter. Banks and office complexes line much of the street, and traffic here is some of the heaviest in Owerri, a side effect of how much commerce runs through the corridor.
Who lives here
Owerri, founded in the 14th century by Ekwem Oha, briefly served as the last capital of the breakaway Republic of Biafra in 1969. Today it’s nicknamed Ala Owerre, and Lagos Street residents live in the middle of one of the city’s busiest trading corridors.
