Idi-Oro: The Empire Axis Where Mushin Meets Surulere

The Empire/Idi-Oro axis is a residential pocket in Mushin Local Government Area, Lagos State, sitting close enough to the line with Surulere Local Government Area that residents here genuinely sit on both sides of it, depending on which street they’re on.

The two LGAs meet a short distance away, near Idi-Araba, so it’s not unusual for two people a couple of streets apart to name different LGAs when asked where they live.

Where it sits

Mushin LGA covers about 17 square kilometers and had a population of roughly 935,000 as of 2022, one of the more densely built parts of the Lagos mainland. Migrants moved in fast after Nigeria’s 1960 independence, straining sanitation and housing early on, before small-scale industry, textiles, shoemaking, and bicycle assembly gave the area a stronger economic footing.

Streets and security

All the streets in this pocket are tarred, with gutters running along both sides. Compounds sit on relatively serene streets with multiple entrances, and each entrance has its own gate with a stationed security guard.

Most compounds don’t have enough parking, so cars often end up parked outside on the narrow streets overnight. They’re usually safe there anyway, since guards are posted at the gates through the night.

Traffic is restricted from around 9 p.m., when the main vehicle gates close. The pedestrian side of the gates stays open until midnight, running over the canals that connect the streets internally, so residents can still get in and out on foot after the main gates shut.

Housing costs

Mini flats go for about 2 million naira a year. Three-bedroom apartments start at around 3 million naira a year.

Landmarks and everyday spots

The well-known Tejuosho Market is within easy reach. GTBank and Zenith Bank both have branches nearby along Western Avenue, the road that leads toward Ojuelegba, and the Army Barracks sits directly opposite those two banks. Bethesda Home and School for the Blind is another landmark residents point to when giving directions.

Power and waste

Electricity supply runs for at least 18 hours a day most days. LAWMA handles waste disposal on a biweekly schedule, though pickups are sometimes missed. Residents have mostly learned to work around it rather than fight it.

Who lives here

Taken together, it’s a decent residential area: tarred streets, guarded gates, workable power, and a market, banks, and a school all within walking distance. Sitting right on the Mushin-Surulere boundary just means residents get the practical benefits of both sides of that line, without fully belonging to either one on paper.
