Akpajo: The Junction on the East-West Road
Akpajo is one of ten communities making up Eleme Local Government Area, Rivers State, about twenty kilometers east of Port Harcourt.
Where it sits
The town sits along the East-West Road, one of Rivers State’s major highways, which puts it on the route most people take between Port Harcourt and the rest of Eleme, including Aleto and the refinery corridor.
Getting around
Akpajo junction is one of four points on the flyover Julius Berger built to link Rumuokoro, Aba Road, Akpajo, and Rumuodara, commissioned in December 2022 under then governor Nyesom Wike. It’s also the junction residents heading toward Aleto and the refinery use to pick up a bus or keke straight there.
Who lives here
Like the rest of Eleme, Akpajo belongs to the Eleme people, an ethnic group whose language sits in the Cross River branch of the Niger-Congo family. Traditional authority runs through the Oneh Eh Eleme, the King of Eleme, currently Philip Osaro Obele.
Neighboring areas
Akpajo connects directly to Woji in neighboring Obio/Akpor and to Aleto within Eleme, both reachable through the junction and the East-West Road.
